Rollover Wreck Seriously Injures Three People

Rollover

Few details were available after a rollover wreck on the East Freeway seriously injured two children and one adult.

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a major crash on the main lanes of the East Freeway at Freeport. A two-car crash where one of the cars flipped over several times causing ejection. The car was occupied by one adult and two children.

No other injuries were reported.

Car Crash Injuries

Despite the advent of advanced safety restraint systems and engineering methods, vehicle collisions still kill or seriously injure millions of Americans every year. Today’s cars and trucks are so fast and large that no safety system, however advanced, can possibly absorb all the force in a high-speed wreck. Some common serious injuries include:

  • Head Injuries: Even if victims aren’t ejected from crashing vehicles, they usually sustain head injuries. The motion of a crash, when the head violently snaps forward and backwards, usually causes the brain to slam against the inside of the skull. Head injuries are usually permanent. Dead brain cells normally don’t regenerate.
  • Broken Bones: The aforementioned safety systems don’t prevent arms and legs from flailing wildly during vehicle crashes. The motion, along with the impact, usually crushes these bones. Once again, these injuries are normally permanent. Broken arms heal, but range of motion issues in the shoulder and other joints remain.
  • Internal Injuries: When car crash motion sends internal organs smashing and grinding against each other, they usually bleed profusely, since internal organs have no protective skin layers. In fact, by the time these victims reach hospitals, they’ve usually lost at least a fifth of their blood supplies.

The medical bills in a serious injury case usually exceed $40,000. Typically, group health plans don’t pay these bills, for liability reasons. A Sugar Land car accident lawyer goes to court and obtains the compensation these victims need to pay accident-related expenses and move on with their lives.

This compensation usually includes money for economic losses, such as medical bills, and noneconomic losses, such as pain and suffering.

Evidence in Car Crash Claims

To obtain this compensation, a Missouri City personal injury lawyer must prove negligence, or a lack of care, by a preponderance of the evidence, or more likely than not. So, a successful claim is built on evidence.

Frequently, as in the above story, not much evidence is initially available. So, attorneys must dig deeper to find evidence like:

  • Additional Witness Statements: Chances are, somebody saw something. However, for various reasons, most people don’t hang around accident scenes and give official statements to police officers. However, witnesses usually give statements to attorneys, especially if someone was seriously injured or killed.
  • Electronic Evidence: All vehicles have Event Data Recorders. These onboard computers measure and store information like vehicle speed and steering angle. So, an EDR is like an eyewitness that, since it’s a computer, is never biased or inaccurate.
  • Expert Testimony: Sometimes, attorneys partner with doctors, accident reconstruction professionals, and other such experts to connect the dots for jurors. If jurors see the complete picture, they usually award additional compensation.

Most car crash cases, and most personal injury cases in general, settle out of court. Typically, a professional mediator brings the two sides together on a settlement figure.
